Lisch nodules associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) are usually multiple and bilateral in nature. Here, we report a 21-year-old healthy, Caucasian female who was diagnosed with multiple, unilateral Lisch nodules during routine eye examination. A thorough history and physical examination revealed no other signs of NF1. We diagnosed the rare occurrence of numerous, unilateral Lisch nodules in the absence of additional features of NF1 in our patient and provide a discussion concerning the differential diagnosis of Lisch nodules as well as the potential genetic explanation of this finding.

The consequences of release from the state psychiatric hospital for patients who had spent a considerable part of their life in an institution was analyzed. Conclusions demonstrated that ex-patients were generally able to stay out of the hospital and the recidivism rate was low, thus they were not consistent with the revolving door phenomena. While these ex-patients were infrequently returning to the hospital, they often were continuing to experience psychiatric symptoms and a poor level of functioning. It appeared that a substantial need existed for continuing treatment and these ex-patients were infrequently entering the system of community services. There was substantial evidence pointing to the need for outreach and case identification programs in the community to increase utilization of services.

An acute gastrointestinal illness affected 213 (52%) of 407 campers and 64 (52%) of 121 staff attending a boy's camp in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland during the summer of 1981. Nausea was the predominant symptom for ill campers and staff (73%), but more staff members experienced diarrhea (49%) than did campers (9%, p 0.001). Eight of nine paired blood specimens from ill staff members showed a 4-fold increase in antibody titer to Norwalk agent by radioimmunoassay. A common source could not be identified for the outbreak. The slope and pattern of the epidemic curve were compatible with a person-to-person spread. It is hypothesized that the outbreak was initiated by the arrival of new campers in the middle of the season and perpetuated by the close personal contact provided by camp life.

Kresek (or wilt) symptom of the bacterial blight sydrome developed on rice seedlings when they were inoculated either by leaf clipping or by root-dipping. Kresek resulted with less frequency when older plants were infected with leaf blight. The pale yellow symptom was found to be a secondary effect of either leaf blight or kresek. The older the plants, the lower the percentage of kresek induced by root dip. There were varietal differences to kresek infection. IR1545 was as susceptible as IR8 from 6 to 16 DS. Varieties such as IR20 and IR1545 are resistant to leaf blight but as susceptible as IR8 to kresek. Dipping seedling roots in zinc solution before transplanting reduced the incidence of kresek.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage from the use of enoxaparin is very rare but can be fatal. Although most cases are treated by conservative means, there may be a role for surgical intervention. We present the case of a 77-year-old man who developed a large retroperitoneal hemorrhage during treatment for pulmonary embolism and atrial flutter with enoxaparin in which supportive measures failed and necessitated surgical correction. This case adds to the growing number of cases of enoxaparin induced spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage and the importance of surgical intervention when conservative management fails.

Mechanistic insight about "pain-only" decompression illness (DCI) is limited given indirect information about venous gas emboli (VGE) detected in the pulmonary artery with Doppler ultrasound. However, we show that VGE first detected late in an altitude exposure are closely associated with subsequent symptom onset. Knowing that VGE occur late is an indication that a symptom will occur soon, but this is not a sufficient condition to guarantee that a symptom will occur.
